What is Hypothyroidism? What Are the Types and Symptoms of Hypothyroidism? How to Diagnose Hypothyroidism?

About Hypothyroidism

This is a type of disorder that is associated with the endocrine system. In this condition the thyroid glands in our body are not able to produce the required amount of thyroid hormone. Doctors have come to the conclusion that this disorder is caused due to lack of iodine in our diet. However the good news is that this condition can be treated effectively by administering levothyroxine. The dosage can be adjusted as per the intensity of the condition.

Clinical manifestation and symptoms of hypothyroidism

People with hypothyroidism sometimes do not experience any symptoms. There are far too many symptoms associated with this condition. Sometimes these are caused for some underlying reason or due to insufficient hormones. Some general symptoms are listed below and these are the symptoms that I experienced too.

  • Fatigue
  • Feeling very cold
  • Lack of concentration
  • Poor Memory
  • Extreme Constipation
  • Too much weight gain with little food
  • Out of breath
  • Hoarse voice
  • Heavy flow during menstrual period
  • Hard of hearing

Diagnosis basis of hypothyroidism

Tests conducted in the laboratory are considered the best way to determine the hormone levels. A TSH level is taken after a couple of weeks later than the first one, this test is basically conducted to obtain confirmation. The levels may fluctuate in case of certain other illnesses. A high TSH level usually means that the thyroid gland is not functioning well and is not producing enough of Thyroid enzymes. Increase in the level of creatine is yet another basis on which a diagnosis is conducted. Once the condition is treated the levels come back to normal. Acute cases of Myxedema coma is often linked with very low levels of sodium in the blood. If aHypothyroidism patient does not have any lumpy growth within the gland the he or she does not have to go in for a thyroid imaging. If the doctors feel that there is something abnormal about the thyroid gland then thyroid imaging will have to be done to know things for sure. If there are any antibodies present near the gland then a needle biopsy has to be conducted to confirm suspicion. This condition may be prevented by encouraging people to add iodine to their diet. Certain countries have been able to eliminate this condition in children. Going through all the facts on the diagnosis, I really started to understand the condition and it helped me mentally prepare for the treatment.

This condition usually occurs because the thyroid gland underperforms and does not produce enough hormones. There are certain symptoms that you can keep in mind to understand whether you suffer from thyroid related problems or not. Doctors have cited iodine deficiency as the primary culprit. There are a lot of children and adults that suffer from this problem all over the world. The good news is that this can be treated very easily and for that you will have to visit a doctor. You may have to undergo a few tests to determine the intensity of your problem and to initiate treatment. This condition is quite common and so there is no need to feel scared, just consult a good doctor and have faith. I had suffered from this condition but after a few visits to the doctor I am fully cured, it did take time but I am free from this condition as of today.
